There are many programs available that let you download videos from YouTube to your hard drive and today I am going to review YouTube Video Downloader from Media Vigor. Installation is straight forward enough but it does try to get you to install two browser toolbars but these can be declined easily enough.

The first time I opened the program my Avast anti-virus sandboxed it while it analysed it, eventually coming to the conclusion that there was not enough evidence to suggest it was a threat but advising to proceed with caution. In trial mode you get an alert on the screen for about five seconds advising you that you have ten days to evaluate the product before it will stop working.

After that the main screen appears (see screenshot 1).  Do you notice that icon with the small globe and arrow?  That stays on your screen rather annoyingly whatever program is being used at the time although it can be dragged off to the side.  I presume it is the “Drop Zone” that the main screen mentions.  Going onto YouTube I tried to drag a video onto it as suggested but it was not possible.  So not only is this “Drop Zone” feature obtrusive it is useless as well.

Pressing the download button will bring up a dialogue box (see screenshot 2) in which you can enter a URL for the video you want to download as well as the settings you want to use for conversion.  YouTube Downloader can convert the YouTube video into AVI, WMV, MOV, 3GP, MP4 or MP3 formats and conversion does seem quick and the output file is of decent quality.

You can search YouTube from inside the program (see screenshot 3) and start the download from the search dialogue box, search was fast and accurate.

One big problem that I ran into was that many videos on YouTube have some form of copy protection built into them and this would cause YouTube Downloader to throw up four error dialog boxes one after the other. Out of about thirty videos that I tried to download only about ten actually worked because of this.

As I mentioned previously, you get a 10 day evaluation period before you have to pay for the program and you get nag prompts asking you to buy the product on start-up and exit, as well as after every download or failed download for that matter.

Verdict - The idea behind the program is certainly a good one but the annoying “Drop Zone” feature really spoils YouTube Video Downloader in my opinion and I would check out other similar programs before parting with any cash.
